Kun Trigram – Unicorn System

The Unicorn/Qilin isunicorngrey the opposite of the Lion, representing pure Yin energy. It is known as the mother of the trigrams and animal systems of Baguazhang. The unicorn is characterized as the Reversing the Body Palm, capable of yielding and attacking with a whirling, whipping force. This system develops appropriate change in response to outside forces, the method of yielding and sticking to an incoming attack rather than attempting to meet it with opposing force. The Unicorn's striking methods are: sticking, adhering, soft, following, hip, striking, chopping and cutting. It generates segmented force by utilizing all joints, to produce a flexible, snapping power capable of dissolving, redirecting, and striking an opponent.

 

Qian Trigram – Lion System

The Lion System develops pure Yang energy, and evolves the muscles and tendons most rapidly out of all the animal systems ofliongrey Yin Style Bagua. This system is Men Baozhen, Yin Fu's Grand Disciple's, preferred fighting style and represents the strongest and fiercest of the animals. It is also known as the father of all the trigrams and animal systems of Baguazhang. The Lion System is characterized as the Interlocking Palm, capable of generating the most powerful and severing horizontal and vertical forces. The Lion generates direct force through an opponent, without retreat, and strikes continuously in succession, utilizing solid waist power to generate whole body force through the extremities. The lion's characteristic striking methods are: sweeping, cutting, chopping, hooking, shocking, blocking, seizing and grasping.

 

Bear System – Rushing

1. Utilizing the four point step system in Yin Style Bagua, starting from the back side of the circle, step out with the left foot and strike diagonally downward with the left arm into a Downward Stamping Rushing Strike.

2. Diagonally advance with the left foot and strike diagonally upward with the left arm into an Angled Rushing Strike.

3. Step back diagonally with the right foot and strike diagonally downward with the right arm into a Downward Stamping Rushing Strike.

4. Diagonally advance with the right foot and step back with the left foot, while pulling with the left arm and striking horizontally with the right arm into a Pulling Rushing Strike.

5. Advance open step with the right foot and strike horizontally with the right arm into an Open Step Rushing Strike.

6. Advance with the left foot and strike horizontally with the left arm into an Advance Step Rushing Strike.

7. Diagonally advance with the right foot and strike horizontally with the right arm into an Inward Rushing Stike.

8. Advance with the left foot and pierce with the right arm towards the center of the circle, into a Penetrating Strike.

Gen Trigram – Bear System

The bear system is characterized by Turningrey bearg the Back Palm and takes advantage from a losing position, achieving victory from retreat. The Bear's striking methods are: rushing, penetrating, withdrawing, carrying, leaning, shocking, soft and following. The Bear's power is generated from the dantian to the back, with a blunt, full body stopping force. The bear utilizes a short distance shocking force issued from the back, distinguished by a "Second Energy" differing from other animal systems of Yin Style Bagua. The opposing arm guard structures of the Bear System protects the front and back sides of the body, revolving in horizontal, diagonal, or vertical planes providing a 360-degree spherical guard around the practitioner. With addition of turning the waist and torque of the legs, the Bear Guard structure defends and strikes multiple directions simultaneously.

 

Kan Trigram – Snake System

Yin Fu, nicknamed "Thin Yin" hawsnaked a long and thin build, his outward appearance concealed his true internal strength. He was famous for his use of footwork in evasion and in applying fierce strikes utilizing the "ox-tongue" palm, as well as short powerful kicks. His quick hand work was best applied in adhering, deflecting, and striking, his power (or fajin) was bold, springy, and explosive. He had sensitive and agile legs, with elite footwork, capable of locking, trapping, or unbalancing an opponent with his legs. Yin Fu could grab an opponent's wrist with great strength- his index, middle finger, and thumb were so strong that the opponent could not break free from his grasp. Using this Snake System technique, Yin Fu could easily crush an opponent's wrist and tendons, as well as defeat the opponent with precise strikes to pressure point areas.The Kan Trigam Snake System's striking methods are: shoulder, elbow, knee, hip, thrusting, binding, entrapping, and grasping. The style is characterized by a coiling, smooth, and flowing moving with the force palm, with many of the strikes targeted at vital organs. Yin Fu utilized grasps and binding techniques capable of sealing and constricting an opponent's martial structures and breath.

 

 

Yin Fu – Imperial Bodyguard

Yin Fu (1840-1909) was senior Baguazhang disciple of Dong Haichuan responsible for the creation of Yin Style Baguazhang. Yin Fu was the earliest disciple of Dong Haichuan and served in the Imperial Security Guards in the palace of Prince Duan of Beijing, China. After Dong Haichuan retired from service, Yin took over as the supervisor of the security guards, working for the emperor in the Forbidden City. Yin Fu served as senior martial art instructor and personal bodyguard of Emperor Guang Xu and Empress Dowager Cixi. The Dowager Cixi is the Great Aunt of Pu Yi, the Last Emperor of China. Yin Fu was considered the most methodical and skilled of Dong Haichuan's students. In 1900, he was responsible for escorting the Empress Dowager out of Beijing when the city was under siege from foreign military.

 

Principals Of The Circle – Stillness In Motion

The circle is the most basic method, yet the most advanced insights evolve from it’s practice. The circle walk training was extracted from ancient taoist knowledge by Dong Haichuan, the creator of Baguazhang. The taoists advise that a person's heart and mind transition in chaos. Concentration on unity makes the mind pure. If one aspires to reach the Tao, one should practice walking in a circle. The practitioner should synchronize breath, flexing of muscle fibers, cycling of energy from the core, and torque with each step in the circle walk so that one replaces one's rapidly changing thoughts with a single, all-encompassing complete body focus, in order to calm one's mind while increasing spatial awareness. The Taoists believe that in walking the circle the body's movements should be unified and the practitioner strives for "stillness in motion." This practice was described as a method of training the body while evolving the spirit and consciousness. When turning the circle for extended durations of time, equilibrium is strengthened and cellular changes occur. Muscular flex and energy move the vertebrae of the spine continuously, generating and cycling more cerebrospinal fluid through the system. Cerebrospinal fluid bathes the brain and spinal cord, cushioning the brain within the skull while serving as a shock absorber for the central nervous system. This protects the practitioner in times of martial combat which requires dampening of impact from strikes which may shock the brain and vital organs. Circle walking methods produce a system of martial arts which the practitioner delivers powerful strikes while remaining in constant motion. Utilizing a combination of precise footwork and body mechanics, the practitioner remains in continuous motion even when applying a block or strike.

Circle, Breathing, Biomechanics

Circle: Heighten cognitive performance and equilibrium with principals of the circle. The circle is the most basic method, yet the most advanced developments evolve from it's practice. With both feet together, the practitioner settles their breath and expands the core. The left foot takes an open step, and turning the circle begins with counter clockwise natural walking. Four to eight steps per revolution. The circle adapts to the size of the environment and distance from an opponent. There is a vortex sensation of walking down a mountain. The circle consists mainly of two steps. Open Step (toe out) and Close Step (toe in). The knees are kept close together, the feet close to touching as we step past. While turning, the lumbar area is rounded out and the abdomen expanded. Maximum torque and power is generated as the waist turns.

Breathing: Boost and synchronize breath capacity with martial movement, utilizing ancient training methods to generate and store energy within the human body. Core muscle control and biomechanical alignments enhance the breath cycle of the practitioner. There are two major abdominal breathing methods widely used. With natural abdominal breathing, the core expands on the inhale, and contract inward on the exhale. The second breathing method is reverse abdominal breathing which reverses the process. With reverse breathing, the abdomen contracts inward on the inhale, and expands outward on the exhale. Yin Style Bagua Hybrid Martial Arts utilizes a balance between these two methods. On the inhale, the abdomen may contract inward or expand outward. On the exhale, the abdomen usually expands outward, but the muscles can both relax or flex. The lumbar and kidney area also expands or contract in the breathing process of this system.

Biomechanics: Optimize your potential with principals and physics, developing accuracy of footwork and body requirements. The stance in general, is three of your feet's distance apart. Both hip sockets are tucked and the tailbone rolls inward, creating the feeling of sitting while standing. Both feet are angled closer to parallel. The legs torque to create an arc at the base of the hips, and peak acceleration and control of muscle fibers, anchors the practitioner into the earth. The legs and hips create a bridge and shift weight around the back, sides, or front of the arc with an exclusive hip system. The core muscles train to expand in the front and the back of the body, developing specific ancient muscle control of the abdominal and lumbar area. The chest is slightly hollowed and chin tucked. The upper back is rounded out and the shoulders are naturally sunken.
